We have brought you the PAM 662& 663 & PAM 786 special editions released by Officine Panerai for SIHH 2016.  The third special edition we will be covering later today.   This morning we are showing you four regular production models that have been introduced.  The Radiomir 1940 3 Days GMT Automatic models PAM 627 and 657 and the Radiomir 1940 3 Days GMT Power Reserve Automatic models PAM 628 and PAM 658. All 4 models have 45mm stainless steel cases.

Only a few Panerai models have a GMT hand that makes a full revolution around the dial once every 24 hours.  This means the wearer can accurately see if it say 12 am or 12pm in their home time zone.  The problem with a 12 hour GMT hand it makes a full revolution once every 12 hours, meaning it is difficult to distinguish for example between 1 am and 1pm in the home timezone.    Panerai has included a 24hr indicator to accompany the 12 hour GMT hand previously on some of their models such as the PAM 233 and PAM 335, which makes it easy to distinguish whether its day or night in the home time zone.

We were scratching our heads when certain Panerai models, were released with a 12 hour GMT hand but with no indicator to determine whether it was day or night.  It is nice to see the 4 new models have the 24hr indicator included.

The PAM 627 and PAM 657 make up the new The Radiomir 1940 3 Days GMT Automatic models and the only cosmetic difference is their dials. In terms of whats under the hood and technical functions they are exactly the same.  Date is located at the 3’o clock position, running seconds at the 9 o’clock position and a 12 hour GMT hand.  The 24hr indicator is linked to the 12 hour GMT hand and is identifiable by a triangle pointer at the same position as the running seconds with am/pm markings on the dial to determine day or night for the 2nd timezone.

PAM00627

PAM00627 Radiomir 1940 3 Days GMT Model with Paris hobnail detailing on the dial

The PAM 627 features a black dial with Paris hobnail detailing and the PAM 657 features a black striped dial.  Ecru coloured SuperLuminova has been used on the all the hands and the numeral and dash markers for the hours on the dial.  No sandwich dial. unfortunately.   We feel the watches may look better with normal coloured SuperLuminova, but that is our personal preference.    We would also prefer if the dial was sans the word “Automatic”, but no big issue there.

The PAM 627 and PAM 657 have the automatic P4001 micro rotor movement, with power reserve indicator on the back.  The movement allows for the hour hand for the local time to be adjusted without stopping the watch and it features a seconds reset device.  This means when the crown is pulled out to the 2nd position to adjust both hours and minutes, the balance wheel is stopped and the seconds hand automatically resets to zero for accurate time sync.  The movement has 3 days of power reserve.

The PAM 628 and PAM 658 make up the Radiomir 1940 3 Days GMT Power Reserve Automatic models.  The PAM 628 has the same black Paris hobnail detailing dial as the 627 and the 658 has the same black striped dial as the 657.

PAM00628

The Power Reserve models have the power reserve indicator located on the front of dial at the 4-5 o’clock position.

Apart from that everything else in regards to functionality and technical features is exactly the same as the other models.  The PAM 628 and PAM 658 use the automatic P4002 micro rotor movement which just has the power reserve shifted to the dial side.

Overall these are four models would be useful for a traveler who needs to track an additional timezone and would look quite nice on the wrist at the same time.

  1. There are tons of topic to discuss in life and for sure we disagree on at least half of them (especially after some good whiskies). But there is one topic all watchonistas c(sh)ould agree on… Panerai is no short of style, class and adventure!
