Breitling Super Avenger 01 is the first watch released by the brand after the major change from July. We were the first to confirm, directly from Mr George Kern, that he was taking the position of CEO for Breitling. The move was and still is viewed with good eyes by the brand’s enthusiasts and market specialists. The first result we see is the release of the Super Avenger 01 Boutique Edition, a limited edition dedicated to the brand’s boutiques. We make today a short introduction of the Super Avenger 01, based on the press release.
Breitling Super Avenger 01 is a serious watch: robust but beautiful, even if the charm comes from the excellent tool watch characteristics: legibility, ease of use, toughness and wrist comfort.
Breitling Super Avenger 01 Boutique Edition
Breitling have had a good year. At Baselworld we saw the mighty Breitling Navitimer Rattrapante and then we reviewed the impressive and affordable Breitling Colt Skyracer. Both watches present excellent specifications and come with a good value for the money.
Super Avenger 01 Boutique Edition is a good-looking chronograph promising the same good ratio of price and quality. The polished Breitling case in steel has a relatively big diameter of 48mm and a water resistance of 300m. The Super Avenger 01 has the aesthetics of a serious diving watch. The brushed bezel has the markings and numerals engraved and a large luminescent dot as the 60 minutes index. As a typical diver, the bezel is a unidirectional ratcheted system. The sturdy design is doubled by screwed-down push-piece guards and solid screw-locked crown with non-slip grip. The pushers and the crown have a nice design that contributes to the watch’s though look. The case’s appearance gives a solid feeling, inspiring trust for any kind of activities. The Super Avenger 01 has the case-back engraved with nice vintage-styled pin-up art and features a red inscription with “Special Delivery”. The watch is available with several choices for straps: steel bracelet, high-resistance military textile fibre, rubber or leather.
In bright light, the black dial with red accents is well contrasted by the hands and indexes. In low light, the luminescent elements take control for a precise readout.
The dial is a standard chronograph layout with central time, small seconds at 9 o’clock, 30 minutes totalizer at 3 o’clock, 12 hours totalizer at 6 o’clock and a well-contoured date window at 4:30 o’clock. The black dial is adorned with large luminescent hour-markers and hands. The dial is decorated with “Edition limitée” inscription in red. The dial legibility promises to be excellent in any light condition.
Breitling Super Avenger 01 is powered by the in-house Caliber 01. Released in 2009, the movement was a result of Breitling’s investment in the development of a new chronograph in 2004, when they feared that the supply of ETA Ebauche movements would disappear. The B01 stands out with a column wheel construction and a vertical clutch. The 4Hz chronograph has COSC certification and an impressive 70 hours power reserve from a single barrel. The movement is nicely decorated with Côtes de Genève, perlage (circular graining), diamond polished bevels and snailing for the ratcheting wheels. Unfortunately, the view of the movement is reserved only to the watchmakers, since the case has a solid case-back.
