Seiko’s Presage collection was initially mainly limited to the Japanese domestic market until its announcement in Baselworld 2016 where it launched the Presage line globally. The Presage collection hovers between the mid-range Seiko 5’s and the more coveted Grand Seiko watches, this collection boasts of having its timepieces made entirely in Japan. The main objective of the Presage collection was to showcase fine Japanese watchmaking standards to a bigger audience.

In the early part of this year, we saw the release of two limited edition Seiko Presage Automatic Chronographs references SRQ019 and SRQ021 to commemorate the 60th anniversary of Seiko’s first automatic mechanical watch in 1956. Both timepieces are exquisite in design such as Ref. SRQ021 where it features Japanese Urushi lacquering, produced by master craftsman Mr. Issu Tamura. To cap off this special year on a high, Seiko has also decided to release the Seiko Presage 60th Anniversary Limited Edition SARW027 timepiece.

The SARW027 comes in a 40.5 mm stainless steel case and features an ivory-toned dial, looking like the SRQ019 in terms of dial color. We like the finishing on the dial where the concentric circles give the timepiece a unique texture and feel. As part of the commemorative design, the watch also features the “snake” S mark on the crown of the SARW027 along with a gold-colored rotor in the movement.

The SARW027’s design was inspired by the first automatic watch produced by Seiko in 1956 and as such, also features gold-colored markers and hands. The only aesthetics change made was the positioning of the power reserve indicator, it was originally positioned at 12 o’clock for the 1956 edition and has now been shifted to the 9 o’clock position. The 2016 limited edition also sees an addition of a date indicator at the 6 o’clock position, making the timepiece more valuable from a functional perspective.

The Seiko Presage 60th Anniversary Limited Edition SARW027 is powered by Seiko’s 6R27 automatic movement. The Seiko caliber 6R27 movement features a 45 hour power reserve and runs at 28,800 bph. This movement can be commonly seen in other Presage models such as the SPB041J1 and the SARW011 timepieces, all also featuring a sapphire case-back revealing a gold-colored rotor in this edition to commemorate the occasion.
