News from Officine Panerai for Watches and Wonders 2015.  For this year’s event the main focus will be the Radiomir 1940 collection.  To give die hard Paneristis a snippet of what is to be shown, Panerai have taken the covers off two new models containing their latest in-house movement the P.1000

The Radiomir 1940 case design marks the design change from the traditional cushion shaped case of the first Radiomir from 1936 to the into the Luminor 1950 case, fitted with the iconic crown protecting device which is now instantly recognisable to watch lovers around the world.

The two new models unveiled are the Panerai Radiomir 1940 3 Days Acciaio PAM00574 and the Panerai Radiomir 1940 3 Days Oro Rosso PAM00575.  Acciaio is Italian for Stainless Steel and Oro Rosso in Italian means Red Gold.  Both watches are 42mm in diameter.  The polished AISI 316L stainless steel case is water-resistant to 10 bar (a depth of about 100 metres) and to 5 bar (about 50 metres) in the gold version.  5NPT red gold, the special gold alloy used by Panerai, has a high percentage of copper, as well as a small amount of platinum which helps to prevent the precious metal oxidising.

The dials of both watches feature the signature Panerai  sandwich structure invented at the end of the 1930s to maximise the visibility and legibility of the markings: two superimposed discs contain the luminous substance which shines through the holes in the upper one, which correspond to the dial markings.

The new in-house movement the P.1000 makes its debut in these two models.  The manually wound movement as the name of the two watches suggests, features a power reserve of 3 days or 72 hours. The oscillation frequency is 4 Hz (28,800 vibrations per hour).  Paying homage to the military history of Panerai, the movement features a seconds reset.  When the crown is pulled out to adjust the time, the balance wheel is stopped and the seconds hand is reset to the zero position.  This allows for synchronization with a reference time signal.

The PAM00574 Stainless version comes on a green alligator strap and the  PAM00575 Oro Rosso is accompanied by a black alligator strap.
