Today we have a special article for readers of Deployant! We will be bringing a you a special series on the rest of the Rolex Daytonas owned by Paul Newman, with actual photos of the watches. Starting the series off with Part 1, the watch he started to wear after giving away the Ref 6239 “Paul Newman Daytona”.
The Reference 6263 Cosmograph Daytona owned by Paul Newman
After Paul Newman gave away the Ref 6239, his next Daytona was a Reference 6263. This watch has a black dial with contrasting white sub dials and the word “Daytona” in red. This watch was also given to him by his wife Joanne Woodward, which was engraved with a special message on the back.
Paul Newman is pictured below wearing his Ref 6263 Daytona, on the podium after a race. Motor racing was one of his lifelong passions. Just like his previous watch, Paul Newman preferred to wear his Daytona on a bund strap instead of the stainless steel bracelet most of the time. As you can see the screw down pushers of the chronograph are unscrewed and the chronograph has been running.
Just like the Reference 6239 Daytona, there is a special message on the back of the watch from his wife Joanne Woodward. It reads: “Drive slowly” Joanne. A touching gesture.
The photo below is from the Sunday Times Magazine issue from the 13th of May 1984 and was taken by famed photographer, Annie Leibovitz. As you can see the Reference 6263 Daytona is on his wrist. Considering the date of the magazine, it is highly likely the photograph was taken sometime early in 1984 or 1983, which indicates Paul Newman had the Ref 6263 at the same time as the Ref 6239.
It may not be an exotic dial but it still has the cool factor since is a Rolex Daytona owned by Paul Newman!
This watch is still in the possession of Paul Newman’s daughter Clea. She mentions the watch and the inscription in an article from the Daily Mail last year.
We found a great shot of her wearing it!
Clea Newman wears her fathers Ref 6263 Daytona on a stainless steel Oyster bracelet! How awesome is that!
