Patek Philippe Perpetual Calendar Chronograph Ref. 5270P-001

The perpetual calendar chronograph is the face of complicated watchmaking at Patek Philippe, even today. Seven years after its first unveiling in 2011, the version of the Ref. 5270 that everybody’s been secretly anticipating has finally arrived. The new Ref. 5270P-001 is not only crafted in the noblest of metals, platinum, it is also endowed with every Patek Philippe enthusiasts’ favourite dial: the salmon dial; all this on a Patek Philippe perpetual calendar chronograph – can it get any better than that?

Dial colour and case material aside, only the hour markers have received a makeover. Instead of stick indices, the new Ref. 5270P-001 is adorned with applied Arabic numerals. While this gives the dial a less streamlined look than before, it significantly adds to the vintage vibe of the watch. The numerals, as well as the hands, are made of blackened gold, and like Pinot Noir, blackened gold pairs extremely well with salmon.

As is the case with all of Patek Philippe’s platinum wristwatches, the new Ref. 5270P-001 is graced with a sparkling diamond between the lugs at 6 o’clock. The timepiece is worn on a hand-stitched shiny chocolate brown alligator strap with square scales and a platinum fold-over clasp.

The Ref. 5270P-001 along with the new Ref. 5270/1R-001 are now the only perpetual calendar chronographs left in the current Patek Philippe catalogue; the rest have been discontinued. The reference has thus far remained in the shadow of the cult-favourite Ref. 5970, its predecessor, despite boasting a technically superior, equally historical movement – will the introduction a platinum case and salmon dial be enough to turn the tide?

The Ref. 5270P-001 is set to retail at CHF165,000.
