Charles Sutanto

Charles horological journey started approximately 15 years ago with the purchase of Jaeger LeCoultre Master Memovox but appreciation of watchmaking has started way before then. An Engineer himself, Charles has always been fascinated with mechanical things, especially watches. Since that first purchase, Charles’ horological journey continued with Audemars Piguet and Panerai. Things started to evolve when Tempus came around on 2007. That was when Charles got introduced to the world of independents and “haute haute” horology. Voutilainen, De Bethune and other independents became the core of Charles’s focus in collecting. But as any collector, there are some momentary lapse of “judgement” with purchases of non independent watches but with high horological history such as Lange& Sohne, Zenith and Patek.

In this modern day and age, I find it fascinating that horology can tell the past, present and future. It’s amazing how such a small instrument can hold so much complications yet still serve the purpose of telling time. I believe this summarizes my passion for watches. I started collecting seriously in 2007 with brands like Rolex, Audemars Piguet and Panerai.

My first grail watch back then was The Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore Rose Gold Rubberclad. Through research in forums and constant visits to ADs, I eventually learned and fell in love with Independent Horology particularly Urwerk. I was quickly obsessed, jumped into the unknown and got myself the Urwerk UR-103.05. I enjoyed their unique way of telling time and from then on, I never looked back. The quest continued and I acquired more Urwerks and eventually some MB&Fs.

The highlight of this hobby is not just collecting but also meeting fellow collectors, watchmakers and even the owners of the brands themselves. It delights me to feel their passion and hear their stories. I’d love to say that I have other hobbies too aside from this but honestly, I’m just a simple person who eats, sleeps and breathes watches. Maybe you can ask again when I’m nearing my midlife crisis although I’m 100% sure that this hobby would still be on the top of my list.
