Baselworld 2016: Speake-Marin Diamond Magister Dong Son Tourbillon

The tourbillon complication had played an integral role in Peter Speake-Marin’s creation – the first watch to bear his name was the Foundation Watch, in which it contains a tourbillon that features the iconic topping tool wheel motif (on the tourbillon cage) which is synonymous with  most of his creations.

Peter’s latest creation, also known as the Diamond Magister Dong Son Tourbillon, is a piece unique timepiece that is part of a series of tourbillon watches that features similar design cues. The inspiration behind this watch was the Dong Son drum. The drum, notably, was hailed from North Vietnam, and they were crafted in bronze between 600 BC and 300 AD. These drums are well-known for its decorations, as well as the geometric patterns or intricate designs that were found on the top or bottom of the drum.

According to Peter, the watch’s dial was inspired by some of the most revered Dong Son drum creations, such as the Hoàng Ha drum and the Ngoc Lu drum. The dial features a myriad of elements, which includes a central starburst and 12 warriors that were placed strategically to act as the hour indices. These designs were formed via an innovative chemical etching process, and it was the only way that will enable such amazing detail to be formed with such high precision on a 1.0mm thick 18k gold dial.

The watch is fitted with the Calibre SM3. This is a self-winding movement which features a platinum micro-rotor, and a power reserve of approximately 72 hours. As its name suggests, the watch is also fitted with a tourbillon complication.

The Diamond Magister Dong Son comes with the signature 42mm Piccadilly case, as well as the “Foundation” style hands that were made from heat blued steel. In addition, the watch is fitted with a bezel that is adorned with 36 baguette diamonds. The crown, similarly, is also set with a round-cut diamond.

As mentioned, this is a piece unique in a series of 8 tourbillon watches that shares the same design cue. For more information, please check out Peter Speake-Marin’s website here.
