Pre Watches and Wonders 2015: Introducing the IWC Portofino Hand Wound Monopusher Chronograph

With Watches and Wonders 2015 around the corner,  IWC has taken the covers off one new watch that will be shown in Hong Kong.  Introducing the IWC Portofino Hand Wound Monopusher Chronograph.

The IWC Portofino Hand Wound Monopusher is the first regular production model in the Portofino range to feature a single button chronograph.  Previously IWC released a piece unique Portofino Monopusher for the 2015 Tribeca Film Festival.  The Portofino Hand Wound Monopusher comes in either a white or red gold 45mm case.

The chronograph push-button is integrated into the crown. By doing this, the case retains its smooth curves.   Repeatedly pressing the single, multifunctional push-button starts, stops and resets the chronograph. When the button is pushed for the third time, all the chronograph displays return to zero.

The manually wound 59360 calibre is an offshoot of the high-performing 59000 featuring a chronograph mechanism.  The movement has power reverse of 192 hours or 8 Days. This movement is new to IWC and only used once previously in a piece unique created as a tribute to the TriBeCa Film Festival released in May 2015.

Movement

The IWC 59360 calibre, featuring 8 days of power reserve.

The amount of energy remaining is displayed on the power reserve display on the dial between “8 o’clock” and “9 o’clock”. The subdial at “12 o’clock” displays the number of minutes recorded by the chronograph while the seconds can be read off on the central hand. Tthe small-seconds subdial is located at “6 o’clock” and the date display at “3 o’clock”. Its nice to see the date disc on the White Gold model, a very close colour shade to the dial.

The activation to start/stop/reset the chronograph is very smooth, and nicely tuned.

The WG model will retail for HK$216,000 ( approx $43,000 Singapore Dollars excluding GST.) and as typical for IWC, the rose gold model is slightly cheaper.
